Rutile vs. Anatase Titanium: Why We Use Rutile There are two distinct crystalline structures of Titanium Dioxide used in the industry: Anatase and Rutile.
Anatase pigments have a lower refractive index and exhibit photocatalytic activity, which causes the polymer to rapidly degrade, chalk, and yellow under sunlight (UV). At Colorex, we strictly do not use Anatase. Instead, we exclusively utilize advanced engineering-grade "Rutile" Titanium Dioxide. Rutile has the highest refractive index (2.73) and offers absolute resistance to outdoor weathering and UV radiation, ensuring ultimate opacity and a striking gloss even at the lowest let-down ratios.
In our advanced laboratory formulations, we utilize special micronized calcite (Calcium Carbonate) technology to prevent the agglomeration of TiO2 particles within the polymer matrix. Micronized calcite acts as a "spacer" between titanium particles. This engineering approach significantly increases light scattering within the polymer, thereby maximizing the product's opacity and enhancing its mechanical strength.
